In December of 2011, Kellan Duffy's birthday, she decided to do something different to celebrate. After much thought and consideration, the plan was to ask several close friends to clean out their closets, Make a big pot of soup or chili to take share and take it to a park to feed, clothe and fellowship with the homeless in the downtown Raleigh area. She knew she needed help from someone familiar to the area and community, in order to make this a successful event.
Otis is a community activist in SE Raleigh. With his knowledge and voice, he was the perfect person to advise us on how to make this work. Together they put on an incredible celebration that touched many lives and created a bond with people in the community. Kellan and her family wanted to continue doing mission work in SE Raleigh community with Otis and came up with the name "Bridge the Gap Mission." From that point on, a wonderful partnership was formed and BTGM was creating events, gathering clothes and much needed household items for low-income families.
In October 2014, Bridge the Gap Mission's store officially opened and in March 2015 we became an official 501(c)(3) non-profit. First United Methodist Church of Cary has been a strong supporter of BTGM, especially Becky Viersen. Becky's late husband, Lee, worked with Otis in the SE Raleigh community and in support of his legacy, Becky has become an integral part of BTGM.
We are extremely thankful for the support of family and friends as well as local businesses throughout the Triangle area, that have helped us progress to where we are today and in our future serving the SE Raleigh community.
The purpose of Bridge the Gap Mission is to improve the quality of life of low-income and disadvantaged individuals and families by helping to provide for their immediate needs, such as clothing and household items; providing educational activities,
organizing special events to promote community involvement and enhance community pride and self-initiative; participating in coalitions with other advocates and networking to identify new resources and partnership.
